1. Somber
1.1. The book had a somber mood in many parts of the book. For example, when Fredrick got beaten with a frozen hose, Werner described it as being "in a hideous and wondrous slowness" (Doerr 194). It shows that the scene was a horrible sight for him because his only friend was suddenly getting beaten. Because Werner didn't want to witness the beating, he constantly tried to remember memories of the Children's house. The end result had Fredrick bleeding profusely from his face and the snow was covered with his blood. Therefore in this scene, it shows how the somber mood of the war.
