3. SDG's in WTO
3.1. The WTO is critical to achieving the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which set targets to be achieved by 2030 in areas such as poverty reduction, health, education and the environment.
4. History
4.1. The WTO was established on 1 January 1995 with the agreement establishing the World Trade Organization as a result of the so-called Uruguay round of trade negotiations and signed in Marrakesh on 15 April 1994 (WTO Agreement). It is an institutional continuation of the 1947 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).The basis of the goods trade agreement is the GATT. GATT recognizes that exceptions to free trade may be necessary to protect higher values such as health and (food) safety.
5. Member
5.1. The WTO has 164 members and 25 observer governments. Liberia became the 163rd member on 14 July 2016, and Afghanistan became the 164th member on 29 July 2016.
