Joe Darko ➡️ Chapter 3 von Mind Map: Joe Darko ➡️ Chapter 3

1. Deep tech Ch.3

1.1. "Like much of the world, we went stir crazy, desperate to leave. Visual Reality (VR) became a respite, a transport beyond the four walls, and offered us a modicum of social contact when we were robbed of so much human presence" (69).

1.1.1. "After several false starts, we finally found a service called Immersed VR. This app allowed us to connect to one another in a virtual room, with an avatar representing each team member" (70).

1.1.1.1. Chris Milk "The cocreator of the empathy machine, an experiment designed to bring world leaders to a young girl in Syrian refugee camp with a deep sense of presence" (74).

1.1.1.1.1. "Focals by North, purchased by Google in mid-2020, are pushing for smart glasses that are styleish, while patents and rumors have it that Apple is working on an AR glasses project of its own. The ultimate goal is to reduce or remove the need to carry smartphones, with virtual devices that you only see and hear" (78).

2. Joe Darko

2.1. Joe spoke about how we were all stuck inside during lockdown we lacked person-person contact and VR allowed for us to escape without leaving our homes.

2.1.1. I believe that when Joe mentioned being able to visit different places and feel like you are there spiked an opportunity for someone to get a sense of what others experience it day to day life. There are some very unfortunate people that are forced into hardship and it's hard to feel/empathize for them. Being able to get a better understanding of what these individuals are feeling/seeing will allow for more awareness on these issues. As a result it would hopefully lead to a spike in activism for these individuals who are in need of help.

2.1.1.1. Obviously Joe's specialty is AR (augmented Reality) "Novelty to Utility" which includes HMD (Helmet Mounted Display) and HUD (Heads Up Display) that Joe exemplified for us. He spoke about glasses that would replace your cell phone and you could read texts or walk past a restaurant and its menu would pop up in the wearers view of sight. Ultimately yes you are present in the real world but this technology enhances it.

2.1.1.1.1. Joe emphasised the educational uses of VR and AR but he said that say if you wanted to experience a certain place you physically don't have to go with the help VR. He brought up a person that may be physically unable to walk around the streets of Italy because they have physical disabilities or are older and were never able to get to a place they wanted. VR allows for them to feel as if they were really present.

2.1.2. Joe mentioned how gaming requires full attentiveness and even before VR you get get that feeling of being a part of the game. With VR you can actually be a part of the game because it fully immersifies you. He said something along the lines of you look around and see nothing but the game itself allowing for that full immersive experience.
