1. SOCIAL DIALECTS

1.1. A variety of language that reflects soial variation in language use, according to certain factors related to the social gruop (social class) of the speaker such as education, occupation, income level.

1.2. STANDARD ENGLISH

1.2.1. Standard English is the form of English that is taught around the world and understood by all speakers of the language. It uses correct grammatical rules and can be thought of as the formal, official, or polite way of speaking or writing. Used in formal settings, for example when we talk or write to people we don’t know well, such as doctors or head teachers. We do this to show them respect or to make a good impression.

1.2.2. GENDER

1.2.2.1. women use more standard variants (= prestige variants, socially accepted variants) than men of the same social class and age under the same circumstances. Men use more non-standard English (considered to express mahism) no matter the social class and age.

1.3. NON STANDARD ENGLISH

1.3.2.1. Adolescents will generally use more non-standard with slangs. From adolescence to adulthood the use of non-standard forms of speech will gradually decrease in favour of more standard forms of speech until adulthood.
