While topped flatbreads were eaten in ancient Egypt and Rome, pizza is thought to have been created by the Italians. Naples was a thriving coastal city during the 1700s and 1800s, especially near the coast, where overpopulation and a predominance of outdoor life prompted inhabitants to develop quick, simple ways to feed their children.
