Chapter 5 Philosophy of Education

1. Existentialism: Individualistic philosophy. Believe that people are placed on earth and must make sense of the chaos they encounter
1.1. Goal of Education: Education is focused on needs of individual, both cognitive and affectively. Education should stress individuality and non rational as well as rational world. They see education a an activity, liberating the individual from chaotic world.
1.2. Role of the Teacher: Helps students achieve the best "lived worlds". Must take risks, exposing themselves to resistant students, must enable their students to become "wide awake".
1.3. Method of Instruction: View learning as personal. Believe each child has different learning style and it is up to the teacher to figure out what works for each student.
1.4. Curriculum: Heavily biased toward humanities. Art, Drama, music encourage personal interaction. Believe exposing students at early ages to problem as well as possibilities, and to horrors as well as accomplishments capable of producing.
