1.1.1.1. Mayella's sudden, refusing outbursts when otherwise she has shown to be shy prove that she is a girl who knows what she wants and won't budge until she gets it.

1.2.1. "...cowards, stinking cowards, the lot of you." Chapter 18, pg 205.

1.2.1.1. Mayella is afraid that Atticus's questioning has lead the jury to question her innocence. She appeals to their sense of white supremacy because she is fearful.

1.3. misunderstood

1.3.1. When Atticus asks Mayella whether she has any friends, she believes he is making fun of her. (chapter 18, pg 200)

1.3.1.1. Mayella's home life is undesirable. This has scarred her irreversibly and causes her to act with hostility towards Atticus, who is treating her cooly but kindly.

3.1.1.1. Her family doesn't care about her, she has no friends and through Tom Robinson's testimony, it becomes evident to the reader that Mayella's miserable existence led her to seduce Tom Robinson.

3.2. Victimizer

3.2.1. Mayella accuses the innocent Tom Robinson of raping her, thereby turning him into a victim.

3.2.1.1. Through her accusation, she puts the life of an innocent man in danger, when in fact Bob was the one who should be accused.

3.3. Fragile

3.3.1. "Mayella stared at him and burst into tears." Chapter 18, pg 195

3.3.1.1. This is one of the first impressions the reader gets of Mayella. She has had little social interaction for years and this fact, combined with the fact that she wants the audience to sympathise with her, motivates her fragile display.
