1. What is it?
1.1. A debate is a structured contest over an issue or policy. There are two sides - one supporting, one opposing.
2. Structure
2.1. Topic
2.2. Teams
2.2.1. Affirmative
2.2.1.1. Agree with the statement
2.2.2. Negative
2.2.2.1. Don’t agree with the statement
2.3. Usually an hour is provided to prepare
2.4. They alternate between teams to speak (negative then affirmative so on so forth)
3. Roles
3.1. First affirmative/negative
3.1.1. Give defitions
3.1.2. Give 2-3 points
3.1.3. Outline teams
3.1.4. If coming second, demonstrate why your defition is better
3.1.5. Rebut some of the arguments
3.2. Second
3.2.1. Resolve any defitional issues
3.2.2. Rebut arguments made by first
3.2.3. Deliver 2-3 in favor or against motion
3.3. Third
3.3.1. Rebut specific issues raised by Second and defend any other important attacks on your team's case.
3.3.2. Include a brief summary speech on your case
