1. Middle Colonies
1.1. New York
1.1.1. New York started out as a Dutch colony of the New Netherland to break away from the king. Most settlers here were Swedish, France, and Portugal. The colony was a big, profitable, economic success by 1660 because of fur trade between the Dutch and the Native Americans. However, colonies whom had settled around their territory were hostile, which created a problem. In 1664, King Charles II of England gave his brother James the right to take the Dutch land away. He sent big warships over and the colony surrendered right away. James renamed his new territory, New York. Later to become a royal colony in 1665.
