The endocrine system von Mind Map: The endocrine system

1. Adrenal glands

2. Pituitary gland

3. Function: Produce hormones that help the body control blood sugar, burn protein and fat, react to stressors like a major illness or injury, and regulate blood pressure.

4. Hormones: Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Aldosterone, Cortisol, and Adrenal Sex Hormones.

5. Location: At the top of the kidneys.

6. Diseases: Cushing's Syndrome- blood glucose remains high, retains too much sodium, puffy skin, masculizing effects in women.

7. Function: Often called " master gland" since it produces many hormones that affect other glands. Actions controlled by Hypothalamus in the brain. Two parts to it: Anterior & posterior.

8. Location: At the base of the brain in the " Turkish chair", hole in the skull.

9. Anterior pituitary hormones: Prolactin or Prl, Growth hormone, Adrenocorticotropin or ACTH, Thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH, and Lutenizing hormone or LH and Follicle- stimulating hormone or FSH.

10. Posterior pituitary hormones: Oxytocin & Antidiuretic hormone or ADH.

11. Made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones (chemical messages).

12. Functions: Regulation of growth, metabolism, and sexual development. Responses to stress and injury. Internal balance of body systems (homeostasis).

13. Hormones: chemical messages that act on target cells (or organs).

14. Endocrine: hormone travels from the gland to the target through the blood.

15. Paracrine: The target is very close to the gland and the hormone.

16. Location: Just in front of your throat area

17. Pancreas

18. Thyroid gland

19. Function: The thyroid hormones control your metabolism

20. Hormones: Thyroxin (T4) & Tri-iodothyronine (T3). Both increase the metabolism

21. Diseases: Goiter, Hypothyroidism, and Hyperthyroidism.

22. Function: Helps the body maintain healthy blood sugar (glucose) levels.

23. Hormones: Glucagon: raises blood sugar concentration by stimulating the liver to break down glycogen.

24. Location: behind your stomach.

25. Diseases: Diabetes Mellitus, Type l, type ll, and Hypoglycemia.
