3. The first big year for Jazz starts around 1913-1914. The word "jazz" first appears in print. James Reese Europe records ragtime arrangements in New York with the first black ensemble to be recorded.

5. In 1917, The classic era of ragtime ends.
6. In 1922, The Blues begins to spring into the mainstream when Blues singer Mamie Smith grows in popularity, recording twenty songs with her band The Jazz Hounds, which features saxophonist Coleman Hawkins.

8. Trumpeter Louis Armstrong has a huge hit and pioneers scat singing with his first recorded original composition, "Heebie Jeebies", featuring his Hot Five in 1926.
