4.1. Jay Samuels work has shown us that direct instruction to teach reading fluency is important. If a child practices, they will get better over time.

4.1.1. Students need fluent reading to be modeled for them by they parents and teachers to develop an internalized model of fluent reading.

4.1.1.1. To help, teachers need to: engage in assisted reading, collect fluency materials and provide performance and celebration.

5. Fluency Development Lesson (FDL)- a direct fluency instruction for use with students experiencing difficulties in fluency and learning to read.

6. Fast Start is an adaptation of the FDL and is intended for use by parents at home with their beginning readers.
