1. Pacific Theater
1.1. Island Hopping: main U.S. strategy, to take one island at a time and gradually work it's way closer to the Japanese mainland, where it could easily assault the island country
1.1.1. Iwo Jima (1945 Feb - March 1945)
1.1.1.1. many Allies fought and died to possess this island and it turned out to be near useless in terms of strategic value, although even more Japanese died defending it
1.1.2. Okinawa
1.1.2.1. highly important capture for the U.S., being only 400 miles off the coast of mainland Japan
1.1.2.2. over 80,00 combined casualties, easily one of the worst the Pacific saw
1.1.2.3. took place on April 1 - June 22 1945
2. European Theater
2.1. Western Front
2.1.1. Germany invades the Low Countries in 1940
2.1.2. used Blitzkrieg to gain vast amounts of territory very quickly and push through much of France and Western Europe, to the point of knocking right up to the English channel
2.2. Eastern Front
2.2.1. Germany invades the Soviet union on June 22, 1941, which ended in a massive siege, which ended disastrously for both sides, ending in the Nazi defeat and near-starvation for the Soviets
2.2.2. during the battle of Stalingrad, indecision from the Nazi party enabled the Soviets to make a comeback in 1944, utterly annihilating the Axis forces, and pushing them back into pre-war German borders
3. African Theater
3.1. Western Desert Campaign (1940-1943)
3.1.1. Italy's offensive through the Sahara in order to gain more land
3.1.2. most Allied manuevers here were highly defensive/conservative in nature
3.1.3. in June 1943, Allies pushed the Axis Westward towards their original landing zones, past Tripoli
3.2. Operation Torch (Nov 8th 1942- Nov 11 1942)
3.2.1. Allied forces land in North Africa to cut off German and Italian forces in North Africa
3.2.2. End up taking Oman and Morroco to the intended effect of destroying Axis power in Africa
3.3. Tunisian Campaign (Nov 1942 - May 1943)
3.3.1. Allies advance into Tunisia to expel Axis from Africa entirely
3.3.2. successful operation, with the Allies taking over 275,00 Axis POW's
