Residential Wood Framing Methods

1. Platform Framing

1.1. Most Common Framing Method used in Residential Construction

1.2. Floors are "stacked" - 1st Floor is Framed, 2nd Floor is Framed on Top of 1st Floor, etc.

2. Post and Beam Framing or Timber Framing

2.1. Typically used in "Lodge" type Structures, Cabins, Barns

2.2. Frame is Constructed using large (8" X 8" and larger) Posts and Beams and Mortise and Tenon Joinery

2.3. The drawbacks to this Method are Expense and Scarcity of Craftsmen in some Areas

3. Balloon Framing

3.1. Studs are continuous from Foundation to Roofline

3.2. Rarely used due to difficulty of finding long, straight wooden studs.
