Juno par Mind Map: Juno

1. Relationships that develop between characters and outcomes of these relationships. - Alex Steel

1.1. Vanessa and Mark

1.2. There are many relationships developing throughout the film and these relationships directly impact upon the storyline or plot of the movie.

1.2.1. Juno and Paul/Bleaker

1.2.1.1. Juno and Paul's relationship at the beginning of the film appears to be quite awkward and not very strong but as their romantic relationship developed they know each other better than ever. This causes increased maturity for both of them, and this is also caused by the significant events taking place within their relationship, such as their sexual relations and the giving up of the baby. Their relationship impacts on Juno's wellbeing as his kindness provides her with stability and a chance to give her a good start for the rest of her life.

1.2.2. Juno and her family

1.2.2.1. Due to the close relationships between Juno and her family Juno has the confidence to be herself and to follow her own decisions enabling her to make the most of her complicated circumstances.

1.2.3. Vanessa and Mark

1.2.3.1. The relationship between the two adoptive parents seems very perfect and loving, however as more insight is provided into their relationship this is obviously not the case. Their love didn't last as long as they'd hoped and they had turned out to be completely different people with a different outlook on what they want their lives to be. This then causes Juno to think about her decision and greatly impacts on the future events to occur once she witnesses the dysfunctional manner of their relationship. Juno then decides that Vanessa could still have the baby because of her motherly nature, however because of Mark and Vanessa's split the whole situation changed dramatically.

1.2.4. Mark and Juno

1.2.4.1. The adoptive father, Mark, and Juno form a very strong friendship early on in the whole process. This friendship enables Juno to see a side of Mark that is kind and compassionate which is everything Juno wants for her babies parents. Mark's kind side is only one part of him and his relationship with Vanessa, his wife, clearly shows another part of him which impacts on Juno's decisions.

2. Key moments/events that shaped the narrative. Holly

2.1. Juno becomes pregnant

2.1.1. The movie begins with Juno taking her third pregnancy test. It comes out positive again, and she finally accepts that she is pregnant. The father is her longtime admirer Paulie Bleaker.

2.2. Juno tells her parents

2.2.1. After Juno decides not to get an aboriton, she then has to tell her dad and step mum. She's incredibly nervous about this because she's not sure how they will react. After she tells them, it's obvious that they are disappointed in her and are incredibly shocked, but they decide to help her and admire her strength of not getting an abortion and finding adoptive parents. They also decide to help her by buying her vitamins and pre natal things etc.

2.3. Visits the abortion place 'women now'

2.3.1. Juno decides initially that she wants to go through with an abortion, however, as she walks in a girl from her school is protesting outside the abortion centre. This doesn't initially affect Juno, as she continues into the centre to go through with it. This changes though, when she sits down in the waiting room to fill out her form and the noises around her set Juno on edge as she realises she can't go through with it.

2.3.1.1. Juno initially is portrayed as quite robust and strong, however, not empathetic. This is shown when she's outside with the girl protesting. She has no immediate reaction to her and feels little remorse.

2.3.1.1.1. New node

2.3.1.2. Su-Chin: [protesting in front of the abortion clinic] All babies want to get borned! All babies want to get borned!

2.4. Finds adoptive parents for her baby

2.4.1. After deciding to keep the baby, she realises that she needs to find parents to adopt her baby. With the advice of her friend Leah, she consults the Penny-Saver, a newspaper, to look in the ads. This is where she finds Vanessa and Mark who looked 'perfect in black-and-white'.

2.5. Mark and Vanessa divorce

2.5.1. The moment that Mark tells Juno that he's divorcing Vanessa Juno immediately breaks down in tears and runs from the house. She is distraught at the idea that her perfect adoptive parents of her child aren't perfect anymore and has difficulty coping with this.

3. Filmic or production elements which add to our understanding of the things above.

3.1. A production technique includes the start of the film, where Juno is seen walking and drinking SunnyD, in a cartoon/collage like animation. This reflects the quirkiness of Juno and how she appears different from everyone else.

4. People aren't as they seem- we judge them at the first chance we get even if they are completely different to what they appear.

4.1. scene with dad and juno- 1hr 17minutes

4.2. jock guy with juno and popular girl likes teachers stereotypes at school- 12 minutes

4.2.1. "Juno MacGuff: The funny thing is that Steve Rendazo secretly wants me. Jocks like him always want freaky girls. Girls with horn-rimmed glasses and vegan footwear and Goth makeup. Girls who play the cello and wear Converse All-Stars and want to be children's librarians when they grow up. Oh yeah, jocks eat that shit up. [pause] Juno MacGuff: They just won't admit it, because they're supposed to be into perfect cheerleaders like Leah. Who, incidentally, is into teachers. "

4.3. seems like a bitchy step mum but she stands for juno- 40 minutes through the movie

4.3.1. Juno MacGuff: Well, no, but I want Mark and Vanessa to be surprised and if you tell me I'll just, like, ruin everything. Ultrasound Technician: Are Mark and Vanessa your friends at school? Juno MacGuff: No, no, no. They're the adoptive parents. Ultrasound Technician: Oh, well thank goodness for that! Bren: What's that supposed to mean? Ultrasound Technician: I just see a lot of teenage mothers come through here and it's obviously a poisonous environment to raise a baby in. Juno MacGuff: How do you know I'm so poisonous? What if these adoptive parents turn out to be, like, evil molesters? Leah: Or, like, stage parents. Bren: They could be utterly negligent. Maybe they'll do a far shittier job of raising a kid than my dumbass step-daughter would. Have you considered that? Ultrasound Technician: I guess not. Bren: What is your job title exactly? Ultrasound Technician: I'm an ultrasound technician, ma'am. Bren: Well, I'm a nail technician and I think we both ought to just stick to what we know. Ultrasound Technician: Excuse me? Bren: Oh, you think you're so special because you get to play Picture Pages up there? Well, my five year old daughter could do that and let me tell you, she's not the brightest bulb in the tanning bed. So why don't you go back to night school in Mantino and learn a real trade. Juno MacGuff: Bren! You's a dick! I love it!

4.4. Mac MacGuff (Juno's father) says 'i thought you were the kind of girl who knew when to say when' when Juno tells the she's pregnant

4.5. Leah liking older men, when she's supposed to be interested in jocks. Also on her bedroom wall are heaps of photos of older men which she likes, including Prince Charles looking old.

5. How characters develop and change: their decisions, motivations, what influences them. By Issy Di Nello

5.1. Vanessa: Vanessa has the perfect life, except for one thing. She feels like she is missing the chance to be a mother. She has read all the books, taken every course and feels completely prepared. When Vanessa first meets Juno, she is skeptical that she will get cold feet, as previous surrogates have. This is evident, as she gets her husband to check on Juno when she goes to the bathroom. When Vanessa discovers that Mark isn’t ready to become a father and wants to divorce, she feels cheated as her perfect life begins to crumble apart. She almost turns her back on Juno and the baby, but when she receives a letter from Juno saying ‘I’m still in if you’re in’, she changes her mind. Nothing is more important to Vanessa than being a good mother.

5.2. Juno: Juno comes across is a confident quirky girl who believes in herself. This is evident, as it was her idea to get together with Bleaker. When Juno first finds out she’s pregnant, she tells Bleaker very casually trying not to make it a very big deal, by saying she’ll ‘just nip it in the bud while it’s still early’. She is convinced that she’ll get an abortion, but changers her mind when she remembers her conversation with Su-Chin outside the abortion center. She tells Juno about her fetus having a heartbeat and nails. Juno finally decides to keep the fetus, meaning she will have to tell everyone, including her family. Juno feels overwhelmed and that she is expected to act more like an adult, now that she is looking after not only herself, but a fetus.

5.3. Mark: When we first meet Mark and Vanessa, they seem like the perfect couple; successful, big house and in love. When Juno and Mark spend more and more time together, Mark begins to change. At first he is embarrass when he shows Juno his guitar and when she makes fun of his taste in music. As this relationship progresses we notice that Mark begins to dress more like Juno, wearing more casual clothes, which contrasts to Vanessa’s white pearls and camera sweaters. This is because he is interested in the idea of becoming a teenager again, hence wanting to leave Vanessa and not feeling ready to become a father.

6. HYPOTHESIS IDEAS

6.1. quotes

6.1.1. "Vanessa Loring: What are you saying? Mark Loring: That it feels a little like bad timing. Vanessa Loring: What would be a good time for you, Mark? Mark Loring: There's just some things that I still want to do. Vanessa Loring: Like what? Be a rock star? Mark Loring: Don't mock me. Vanessa Loring: I'm just saying that this is - this is something that's never gonna happen. You know -Your shirt is stupid. Grow up. If I have to wait for you to become Kurt Cobain, I'm never gonna be a mother. Mark Loring: I never said I'd be a good father."

6.1.2. Juno MacGuff: That's not what it's about. I just need to know that it's possible that two people can stay happy together forever. Mac MacGuff: Well, it's not easy, that's for sure. Now, I may not have the best track record in the world, but I have been with your stepmother for 10 years now and I'm proud to say that we're very happy. [Juno nods] Mac MacGuff: Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with.

6.1.3. "Juno MacGuff: Bren! You's a dick! I love it!"

6.1.4. Juno MacGuff: I'm just gonna go ahead an nip this thing in the bud. Cuz you know, they say pregnancy often leads to, you know... an infant

6.1.5. Mark Loring: [to Juno] You are so young.

6.1.6. Rollo: Well, well... If it isn't MacGuff the crime dog! Back for another test? Juno MacGuff: I think the last one was defective. The plus sign looked more like a division sign so I remain unconvinced.
