2. Substantive Law
2.1. Consists of all laws that set out the rights and obligations of each person in a society.
2.1.1. 1. Public law- regulates relationships between the government and society
2.1.1.1. a) Criminal Law
2.1.1.1.1. Outlines offences aainst society and prescribes punishments.
2.1.1.2. b) Constitutional Law
2.1.1.2.1. Laws that set out the structure of our federal government and outline the division of powers between federal and provincial government.
2.1.1.3. c) Administrative Law
2.1.1.3.1. Governing relationships between citizens, the government, and public agencies.
2.1.2. 2. Private/Civil law- Outlines the personal relationships between two private parties.

2.1.2.1.1. Deals with all relationships between employers and employees.
2.1.2.2. b) Property
2.1.2.2.1. Deals with issues between individuals over land/renting.
2.1.2.3. c) Contract
2.1.2.3.1. Deals with legally binding agreements that impose rights and responsibilities upon others.

2.1.2.4.1. Deals with the relationships between individuals living together.
2.1.2.5. e) Tort
2.1.2.5.1. Deals with wrongs committed against another which is not dealt with by the criminal law.
