1.2.1.2. Some young men try to avoid gang members so that they do not get involved.

1.3. Also offered some form of protection, seen as an internal security structure.

1.3.1. May also need to seek their approval for many things.

1.4. Cycles of violence due to struggles with other gangs.

2. Police Bandits

2.1. Police taking money from the leaders of gangs

2.1.1. Threatening and sometimes commiting violent acts when they did not receive the money they wanted.

2.1.1.1. The police earn more from corrupt practices than their own salary.

2.2. Death squad members

2.3. The poor see the police as part of the problem, part of the violence where as the structure is different in the middle and upper class

3. Revenge practices used by both gangs and police.

3.1. Replaces the dysfunctional legal system

3.2. Gang Rivalries

4. Private Matters/Local Justice

4.1. Child Molester was beaten and expelled from the favela.

4.2. Shot and expelled a rapist

4.2.1. The rapist later had the man who shot him killed.

4.3. Citizens only care that justice is served , it does not matter who serves it.

5. Pedro Paula Gang Leader, Gloria's Eldest son

5.1. In Prison rebelling against the circumstances of his birth.

5.1.1. Died just a few months after leaving prison.

5.1.2. Prisons have overnight visits, with inmates and visitors in the same room.

5.1.2.1. Young girls giving themselves to save or turn around the life of a criminal.

5.1.2.2. Prisoners attempting to sexually harass a female visitor.

6. Gloria did not provide a home for her first born.

6.1. Children with no home go to institutions such as FUNABEM, or FEBEM, or live on the street.

6.1.1. Institutions are brutal, rape and abuse occur.

6.1.2. Street children are massacred.

6.1.2.1. This is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard of. Police shooting children, horrific!

7. Even though Gloria was unable, and sometimes unwilling to provide for her own children, she still took in other children.

7.1. Kicked two of her own daughters out on the street with nothing.

7.2. Physically abused children as "punishment", took children in to exert her own power over them

7.2.1. Lucas was "saved" by Gloria, but then forced to eat his own feces as punishment

7.2.1.1. Years later Lucas threatens Gloria's life.....(not surprised!).
