1. Characterization

1.1. Togan was described as a good wrestler so immediately you think he is thick, muscular, and strong.

1.2. The so called ghost was described as having unkempt white hair a dirty kimono and being closer to death then; than life.

1.3. IN chapter 16 when taro killed a ronin this characterized him as a killer and then killing someone for doing a crime was sign of honor

1.4. Taro used direct characterization when he worked in the stables of Lord Akiyama. He described the master of the stables,jiro, as a troublesome master that was very concerned about his dignity.

2. Setting

2.1. This story takes place throughout in feudal japan

2.2. From 1185 to 1600's A.D.

2.3. During this time you had powerful nobility(daimyo) and weak monarchs or emperors . During this time, there was a lot of fighting and war so people would seek protection these people were called vassals. THey would get protection from the lord and they would give there loyalty which meant they would fight for the lord when the time came.

2.4. In chapter 6 when Taro was ordered to go to Toko-Ji temple he was there for the whole night, He described the venue and castle. Taro explained that the temple was large and not many people go their to worship. He also stated that Lord Akiyamas grand father was imprisoned there and thats where he died. The venue was dark and the wind was cool

2.5. Taro describes Iwamura castle as the most beautiful and well situated castle in all of Japan. It has the nickname "Castle of the Mist" because a long time ago their leader threw snake bones into a well which created a mist through the whole mountains which made the enemies retreat. There were vast views from the castle walls and beautiful building.

3. Theme

3.1. The Theme of samurais tale is coming of age

3.1.1. In the story the main character starts off as a little boy who is oblivious to his outside surroundings

3.1.2. He is traumatized by the murdering of his whole family where he is then captured by lord kastuyori

3.1.3. After many battles,changes of position, and adventures. The death of all his friends and even the death of his lords he has developed a sense of the evil that is feudal japan
