1. Cause

1.1. “Civil war has existed between the northern and southern regions of Sudan for more than a decade.” ("Genocide in Darfur Region of Sudan")

1.2. “The Sudanese government exploited these differences by arming ethnic Arab militia groups, known as the “Janjaweed,” to attack the ethnic African groups. The government would attack from the air, and then, the Janjaweed forces would enact a scorched earth campaign, burning villages and poisoning wells.” ("Genocide in Darfur Region of Sudan")

1.3. “The killings began in 2003 and continue still today, as the first genocide in the 21st century.” (Beecroft)

1.4. In 2003, the Government of Sudan responded to a rebellion in the Darfur region of Sudan and began a genocidal campaign against civilians killing over 300,000 and displacing over three million Darfuris. (Sudan Backrounder)

2. Progression

2.1. ”Failed peace talks have allowed for the continuation of the conflict. The most successful talks thus far took place in Abuja in 2005-2006, leading to the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA). (Beecroft)

2.3. Simultaneously, civilians in what was then Western Upper Nile, and what is now Upper Nile State of South Sudan, began to be violently targeted by ethnicity. 3. Resolution

3.1. ”On March 4, 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Bashir for crimes against humanity and, in July 2010, a warrant for arrest on charges of genocide...It is expected that al-Bashir will not face trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague until he is apprehended in a nation which accepts the ICC’s jurisdiction” (Beecroft)
