1. Positive Motivation
1.1. Positive motivation occurs when an athlete performs because they have received rewards for similar actions in the past and they realise that continuing to perform as required results in additional rewards
1.1.1. E.g. Rewarding a soccer player with a new soccer ball every time he/she scores.
1.1.2. Coach giving a pep talk to the team before a major game.
2. Negative Motivation
2.1. Negative motivation is characterised by an improvement in performance out of fear of the consequences of not performing to expectations, such as being dropped to a lower grade team or put on the bench for a previous poor performance. Inspiring an athlete to perform well because they expect to be punished if they fail may work on occasion, but has serious shortfalls.
2.1.1. A coach threatening the position of the player if he/she does not perform.
2.1.2. Taking away leisure activities as a punishment for failure
