Ideas Generation - First Idea

1. Themes:

1.1. Identity (good/bad)

1.2. Binary opposition between good and bad - unconventional, because the opposition is internal, so is only made up of one character

1.3. The idea that various version of our past selves always exist inside us - this is an explanation created by the protagonist, relating to his past experiences/why he can't let go

1.4. The idea of being trapped within your own mind/an attempt to find self-awareness

2. Visual:

2.1. Drawings could be abstract, but their meaning still clear (so that they can still be easily related to the real events which follow)

2.2. General naturalistic atmosphere (i.e through setting, costume) to enhance audience identification

3. Technical:

3.1. Open with drawings (as protagonist draws, showing them gradually completed or pan across different drawings?) to foreshadow narrative - add titles with cast/crew names here

3.2. Begin as a diegetic conversation between the 2 characters, in which the protagonist describes his ideas about our past selves/being good or bad

3.2.1. Proceed to voiceover of this conversation with shots of the drawings happening in reality - he hasn't told her about this, but the audience are made explicitly aware of what is happening

4. Narrative:

4.1. - the protagonist is an artist/aspiring artist (at and art school?) and draws everything he feels

4.2. - his drawings are dark/psychological and begin coming to life (i.e everything he draws happens in reality - if the drawings are abstract, they come to life in a more realistic manner)

4.3. - this makes 'bad things' happen, and he becomes obsessed with the idea that he is a 'bad person'/ what it means to be 'good' or 'bad' - this is driven by past experiences (link to character)

4.4. - he is torn between living with this darkness/fear (his drawings were a form of self-expression so he doesn't want to lose that, but can't risk hurting people he loves?), and letting go/becoming a new person (link to past experiences, which are ultimately motivating these 'dark' drawings

5. Character:

5.1. Protagonist

5.1.1. male (reverse stereotype, presenting men as emotional/vulnerable)

5.1.2. artist/aspiring artist

5.1.3. completely consumed by the idea of identity, what it means to be 'good'/'bad' etc

5.1.4. traumatic past experience - explains darkness of his drawings and fear surrounding being a 'bad' person (for example, one of his parents did bad things and he is afraid of becoming the same?)

5.2. Friend of protagonist

5.2.1. female (reverse stereotype)

5.2.2. strong/strong minded

5.2.3. aspiring scientist

5.2.4. offers logical and emotional support/advice

5.3. Reverse conventions of the binary opposition between men and women (i.e the male character is emotional/confused/vulnerable, whereas the female is stronger/in control etc
