John Donne

1. He entered the University of Oxford at age 12

2. he is noted for his love lyrics, religious verse and treatises, and sermons

4. Despite his great education and poetic talents, he lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends.

5. Donne's earliest poems showed a developed knowledge of English society coupled with sharp criticism of its problems.

6. It is thought that his final illness was stomach cancer

7. Donne is generally considered the most prominent member of the Metaphysical poets

8. Born in 1572 and died in 1631

9. he became a preacher of great power and eloquence and was installed as dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in 1621.

10. Donne's best-known sermon is his last, "Death's Duel," preached at court only a month before his death.
