6.1. The French Forces of the Interior staged an uprising against the German garrison as the US third army approached Paris. On August 25, the bulk of the 2nd Armored Division and the US 4th Infantry entered the city and the commander of the German garrison surrendered France to the French forces. Charles de Gaulle assumed control of the city as the head of the Provisional Government of the French Republic.
