4. Working towards health and safety- Helping people create a better working habitat that is safe and healthy for workers.

4.1.1. Contaminated Food- There were no laws saying that there was a certain amount of things that could be in food.
4.1.2. Lack of Healthcare- People noticed that factory workers were getting sick and dying of lead poisoning

4.2.1. Upton Sinclair- An author that exposed the meat packing industry and "I aimed for the public's heart, Instead accidentally hit their stomachs."
4.2.2. Lillian Wald- Came up with the idea of sending nurses to sick workers
4.2.3. Alice Hamilton- she taught factory workers to make clean air for themselves and helped create better working environments

4.3.1. pure food and drug act- Banned the sale of impure food and medicines
4.3.2. Visiting nurse program- Helped poor workers that couldn't go to the doctors office
5. Working towards Suffrage- Woman's Suffrage was big during this time because they wanted equal rights as men and so they did so.

5.1.1. Women did not have the right to vote. - Since the Civil war, women were fighting for the right to vote just like men

5.2.1. Susan B. Anthony- Was a famous Suffrage president that pushed for women's rights to vote in states
5.2.2. Elizabeth Cady Stanton- The first president of the NAWSA
5.2.3. Carrie Chapman Catt- President of the NAWSA in 1917, told President Woodrow Wilson how important women were for voting

5.3.1. 19th Amendment- Gives women the Right to vote
6. working to end racism-racism was one of the biggest thing that was introduced during slavery

6.1.1. Jim Crow Laws-Meant to enforce segregation
6.1.2. Segregation-The separation between blacks and whites or Chinese and whites

6.2.1. Ida b. Wells- Black journalist that fought against lynching of black boys in the south
6.2.2. W.E.B Du Boise- Created a foundation that fought hard against discrimination in the south
6.2.3. Booker T Washington- He created the military part called the Tuskegee airmen.

6.3.1. N.A.A.C.P- hard working to stop racism and still is today
6.3.2. Tuskegee institute- Created a school for African Americans that helped teach them trades and gain economic strength

7.2.1. Teddy Roosevelt- President that worked to save the beauty of America, created many national parks
7.2.2. John Muir- Naturalist that camped out with Roosevelt to see the wonder of America

7.3.1. Wildlife Refuge- Pelican Island that helped create refuge for the pelicans in Florida
7.3.2. National Parks- Were created to help prevent the cutting down of trees and destruction of habitats
8. Working towards workers rights- Workers did not have a lot of rights back then, so they were mistreated and were severely underpaid

8.1.1. Low wages- Low pay for hard workers did not make them a lot to support their own families while the rich got richer.
8.1.2. Long work days- They had long work days to overwork the people and not pay them during overtime, making the rich richer once more.
8.2. Reformers
8.2.1. Samuel Gompers- Famous union worker that started working in a factory at age 13.
8.2.2. American Federation of Labor (A.F.L)- A group Gompers founded to help the workers gain rights
8.3. Solutions
8.3.1. Labor Unions- These Unions were formed to help create a voice for people in the work force
8.3.2. Strikes- Strikes were used as leverage for workers to get what they want during their work hours
9. Working Towards Prohibition- by stopping the use of alcohol, society would be "Better" in the eyes of some people
9.1. Problems
9.1.1. Alcoholism- A conditions when people are addicted to alcohol and did other bad things with it
9.1.2. Gambling- Gambling was very disruptive to the community because it was tied to alcohol and other horrible crimes.
9.2. Reformers
9.2.1. Mary Hunt- Promoted Better health and no drinking during this time
9.2.2. Carrie Nation- took a hatchet to saloons during this time to destroy alcohol.
9.2.3. Temperance Movement- Movement that encouraged the ban of alcohol

9.3.1. 18th amendment- The amendment that banned the use or selling of alcohol.
9.4. Unintended Consequences
9.4.1. Speakeasy- Illegal clubs that sold alcohol and created mass consumption of the product
9.4.2. Bootleggers- Bootleggers smuggled alcohol to and from places to sell the alcohol and make a profit off of it
9.4.3. Organized crime- Almost in every major city, Organized crime bosses came in to fight over who bootlegged the beer and other things in.

9.5.1. 21st amendment- Repealed Prohibition
