1. A way to measure student learning to improve comprehension or determine if the students have mastered the content. It is used for documentation and to gather data.

2. Interim/Benchmark

2.1. A type of formative assessment: this is an assessment that is done periodically, like at the end of a 9 weeks or during a unit, like a mini-test. Very little student feedback is received from these types of assessments.

2.2. Chapter test: can be done throughout a unit to check for understanding of the unit topic.

2.3. Extended Essay: this can be done in the middle of a unit as well to gauge student understanding and extend that understanding farther than what the lesson does on its own.

3. Summative

3.1. This is a planned assessment that usually occurs at the end of a unit. It is to check for student mastery of the topic.

3.2. Standardized tests: STAAR These are used throughout schools to check for student knowledge of a particular subject and are scored based on specific criteria.

3.3. End of Unit test: can be multiple choice, true/false, etc. and are used to check for student mastery at the end of the unit

4. Performance

4.1. A type of assessment used to measure the student's ability to apply the new skills they have learned throughout the unit.

4.2. Oral Presentation: This can be a way to measure student's mastery of the topic by giving them the task of creating a presentation and presenting it to the class.

4.3. Debate: Students can show their newly learned skills by having a student-friendly debate and sharing what they have learned to argue their side of a topic.

5. Formative

5.1. a way of checking for student learning and comprehension during a unit lesson to adjust instruction as needed. Also helps provide feedback. There are two types, formal and informal

5.2. Quiz: A quiz can be used in the middle of a unit to check for student understanding of what has been learned so far and adjust future lessons as needed.

5.3. Classroom Discussion: A quick discussion of what has been learned so far can gauge where students are at with the topic to help adjust the lessons as needed.

6. Diagnostic

6.1. This type of assessment is used to gauge how much students know about a subject/topic before the teacher teaches the lesson.

6.2. Pre-Assessment: These are a way to check student knowledge of a topic before starting the unit. It can be done in many forms such as multiple choice, word problems, short answer, etc.

6.3. Running Record: This is a diagnostic assessment because the teacher is assessing the student on their reading level in order to determine where they are and what needs to be worked on to increase that reading level.
