1. 19th century - slavery - 1861 - 65 Civil War (the South refuses to abolish slavery) - 1865 13th Amendment -> abolition of slavery in all the states
2. 2000s - 2013: creation of the movement denouncing policing brutality Black Lives Matter after the acquital of officer Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. - 2014: Michael Brown shot in the back by the police, Ferguson riots. - 2015: Freddie Gray dies after his arrest, Baltimore Riots. - 2020: George Floyd killed during his arrest, protest and riots in the U.S.
3. Segregation(1870s-1964) => separation of blacks and whites in the public space by law (separate schools, bathrooms, fountains etc). - 1950s- 1960s Civil Rights Movement fights for equality between blacks and whites, led by Martin Luther King (assassinated in 1968). - 1964 Civil Rights Act Segregation becomes illegal.
