1. Exotic Animals.
1.1. Facts
1.1.1. A high school diploma and on-the-job training or apprenticeship, or a bachelor's degree in animal training. This is very much similar to the requirements for domestic animals.
1.1.2. Much like domestic animals, some exotic animals require the reward based system in order to work. The most important thing is to establish a routine of mental and physical training and care so that the animals that are releasable can be released on schedule.
1.1.3. It is not wise to use force on an animal, and always smart to be cautious. Unlike domestic animals these animals can be big and are very capable of hurting or even killing you. So some training methods that work on tabby cats, probably wont work on Tigers.
1.2. Differences
1.2.1. Any one can train domestic animals, but training exotic animals takes a certain character type. You must be patient and have problem solving skills. You must be willing to work with people as much as the animals, and you must always be gentle and understanding. There is a time and a place for anger and judgment and this work environment is not one of them. You must also be very careful around these creatures. Tigers may be cute and fluffy, but they are not house cats. They are wild animals. Treat them as such.
2. Animals can be broken up into three categories. Two categories for land creatures and one for trainable sea creatures.
3. Exotic Animals
4. Marine Mammals
4.1. Differences
4.1.1. Paraphrased from: vanaqua.org Training is a way for us to communicate with the animals we face. This is especially true with marine mammals. Unlike domestic or exotic animals, marine mammals depend on training not just to be released or showcased but also to build a stronger connection with the people who care for them and others of their kind. Training also makes it easier for professional teams to care for the hurt of sick animals. If the animals are trained not to make a fuss, if will be easier to do things like voluntary and cooperative body examinations, taking blood, body temperature, ultrasound, dental checks and eye exams. Interactions are customized for each animal and vary for health care, exercise, socialization, science, learning, education and play. It also enables scientists to conduct research, such as the echolocation study to help us understand how dolphins and whales navigate underwater using sound and why they continue to get entangled in fishing nets. Marine mammal training might just be the most important one of all.
4.2. Facts
4.2.1. Marine mammal trainers are often on-call 24 hours a day, and often work weekends, varied shifts and even holidays.
4.2.2. Trainers must have the ability to work in a variety of weather situations. Marine mammal trainers work indoors and outdoors, depending on the type of animals in their care
5. Summary of what I learned.
5.1. While your job will involve training animals, you also have to work with their owners. Your ability to get along with the owners will help you do exceptionally in this job. Your interpersonal skills must include patience, kindness, and empathy. I also learned that animal training is alot like teaching a child. You must be repetitive and use humane methods to teach them right from wrong. And when an animal doesn't or can´t learn the criteria, you just have to keep them longer in till, A, they do, or ,B, you are forced to use a different method. Or even teach them differently than your other animals.
6. Domestic Animals
6.1. Facts
6.1.1. The educational requirements to becoming a pet trainer are a high school diploma or a GED in animal care and training.
6.1.1.1. Most professional trainers use reward and correction training as it is one of the most effective ways to train an animal.
6.1.1.1.1. A reward and correction training approach is used not only because of its effectiveness, but because it provides the animal and the trainer to develop a close relationship with one another.
6.1.1.1.2. Sometimes though, you have to change your methods in order to help an animal figure out what you want from them. Another humane training method is Negative reinforcement. Dont worry its not as bad as it sounds.
6.1.2. Television shows show trainers who train aggressive unmaintainable dogs in short amounts of time. This is just for marketing, and overall its really inaccurate. As stated by barkpost.com, ¨In reality, rehabilitating a troubled canine can take months for a trainer, and a lifetime of reinforcement from the owner. It’s an extremely physical job even when working with smaller dogs. Bumps, bruises, bite wounds, and pulled muscles are all par for the course.
6.2. Difference
6.2.1. Training domestic animals is different from training exotic animals. For one training cats and dogs is safer than training elephants and tigers. Another thing thats different, is that you dont necessarily have to be as gentle and cautious around domestic creatures. Exotic animals are wild. They have natural protective proportions and when threatened they can pose a big risk. A lion could really hurt you when afraid or even possibly kill you. The worst a dog will do is nip your hand.
