1. Socioeconomic

1.1. Education: This is shown when the case study states “Despite being very competent he has been overlooked due to not having completed any formal level of education”, this demonstrates how even with his high level of education in Iraq this does not reciprocate to the Australian education levels and abilities.

1.2. Employment: This affects Amir as he is able to secure a “Sturdy job” providing him with comfortability improving his wellbeing

1.3. Income: He is provided with stability and financial support improving his health as he is able access fresh food, health services and safety

2. Environmental

2.1. Geographic: This affects Amir as he moves from Iraq to Australia which positively affects his health as the health benefits in Australia are much better and more effective than Iraq

2.2. Access to health services: Moving from Iraq to Australia has also improved his Amir's access to health services providing him more options and less travel if Amir actually does get sick or injured.

3. Definition

3.1. Determinants of health are the range of factors that can influence an individuals health status or wellbeing. Throughout the stages of life, health is determined by the many complex and diverse interactions between social, economic, physical and individual behaviors. These four determinants are then broken down into more detailed classifications which can be seen through the case study of Amir.

4. Individual

4.1. Knowledge and Skills: Amir is a refugee from Iraq and english is not his primary language therefore he struggles to communicate having a negative impact on his ability to gain knowledge and skills

4.2. Attitude: Amir’s attitude is seen when the case study says “Although this is a frustration for him, he is very grateful to his work”, depicting his positive and professional attitude he has even through challenges and hardships.

5. Sociocultural

5.1. Family: The family determinant is seen through Amir not being able to have his family with him in Australia having a negative impact on his well being as this is causing him to smoke which is a major health risk considering lung conditions run through his family

5.2. Religion: This is seen through Amir having to complete his 5 daily prayers as well as having to comply with religious holidays” however this is positively affecting him as he is able to celebrate this freely as his work supports him.

5.3. Culture: This is the last socio-cultural determinant that affects Amir as the cultural practice of smoking the Hookah negatively affects his health as it is a form of smoking tobacco which can have serious health risks on his body and his lungs.
