1. Igneous

1.1. Formed when magma cools and solidifies, it may do this above or below the Earth's surface.

1.2. There are over 700 different types of igneous rocks.

1.3. Examples of igneous rocks include basalt, granite, pumice, obsidian, tuff, diorite, gabbro and andesite.

1.4. The upper section of the Earth's crust is made up of around 95% igneous rock.

2. Sedimentary

2.1. Formed by sediment that is deposited over time

2.2. These rocks are formed at earth's surface by the hydrological system

2.3. Sedimentary rocks contain fossils.

2.4. Common sedimentary rocks include sandstone,limestone and shale.

3. Metamorphic

3.1. Have been changed over time by extreme pressure and heat.

3.2. Can be formed by pressure deep under the Earth's surface

3.3. Examples of metamorphic rocks include anthracite, quartzite, marble, slate, granulite, gneiss and schist.
