Girl With White Flag novel

1. 3. sum of the story- Soon after, she became separated from her two older sisters and had to adapt and fend for herself on the battle stricken island. After months of scavenging, hiding, and watching the horrors of war all alone, the war ended and miraculously Tomiko survived.
2. point- This story is meant to show the horrors of war, as seen through the young eyes of a child who was there.
2.1. many people during war times turned a blind eye to war victims. WWII happened, but because we (last few generations of Americans) have never experienced it on our own soil (excluding Pearl Harbor), we don’t understand or think about what war would mean for civilians, like Tomiko and her family, who were caught in the battlefield for months.
3. my opinion- Tomiko seemed to hold very little back, she gave descriptive details telling about how she felt sadness when her brother died and fear when she watch a man kill himself.
3.1. As a reader, I felt her words and when she described traumatic events that took place right in front of her, and to her.
4. facts about the book- she reinforced her version of event through war logs and soldier journals.
4.1. Many scenes in the book are pretty gruesome. And as far as controversial or special situations go, Tomiko’s book touches base on rape, death of family members, child abuse, suicide, war, infanticide, and being lost as a child.
4.2. I wouldn’t place this book in the hands of anyone younger than thirteen. Not because they wouldn’t like the book, but because, The Girl With The White Flag, is thought provoking to a depth that might be too much for younger children to analyze in the proper way.
4.2.1. Boys would love this story because of the adventure and graphic nature of the story.
