Barriers to effective communication

1. Not having a rapport with a service user

1.1. They will feel less inclined to trust you and tell you information

2. Not reading casenotes prior to meeting someone

2.1. This can act as a barrier if you don't know someone's risk or their background prior to meeting them

3. Speech and language problems

4. Background noise (e.g. television, radio, etc)

5. Language differences (e.g. a service user who does not speak English

5.1. This can be overcome by a translator

5.2. Using slang or colloquial terms can also act as a barrier
