Bridges por Mind Map: Bridges

1. Who designs and constructs bridges?

1.1. Workers

1.2. Architects

2. Where are bridges usually found

2.1. Across rivers

2.2. Elevated public transportation

2.3. Valleys

2.4. Rough terrains

3. What types of bridges are commonly found

3.1. Beam Bridges

3.1.1. The simplest bridges consisting of a flat layer put on two or more surfaces/pillars/piers

3.1.2. Beam bridges have a tendency to sag (sink down) in between supporting piers and hag (stick up) on the piers

3.2. Arch bridges

3.2.1. Arch bridges are arches connecting two areas

3.2.2. Arch bridges are strong and sturdy, although requires multiple piers, obstructing river flow

3.3. Tied-arch bridge

3.3.1. Type of bridge that has an arch rib on each side, and beams connected to the arch, supporting the deck

3.4. Suspension Bridge

3.4.1. A bridge with pillars above the bridge and lines connected to the bridge to suspend it in mid air

3.4.2. Suspension Bridges usually lack a rigid structure

4. How do we build bridges (material, location, design, etc)?

4.1. Material : Steel, Woods, Cement, Stone, Iron, Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete.

4.2. By determining the climate of the area where you're going to make a bridge

4.3. The design should be a strong, but ergonomic design in able to hold the enormous weight from cars and trucks, especially for freeways.

5. What elements must be considered when building a bridge ?

5.1. stability

5.2. the preparation for different scenarios in the climate

6. Why change or rebuild existing bridges?

6.1. The need for a larger bridge to accommodate for the growth of the city

6.2. To renovate old bridges that are breaking down

6.3. In order to implement better facilities on the bridge

6.4. To improve the aesthetics of the current bridge

7. Why do we build bridges?

7.1. To connect remote areas to the city

7.2. The need to cross a river or valley

7.3. To shorten the distance needed to travel to pass a extreme space

7.4. To increase the amount of usable land because the space beneath the bridge can still be used

7.5. To use for public transportation such as trains while not affecting existing roads

8. What elements are needed to construct a bridge?

8.1. Iron

8.2. Stone in the early time

8.3. Steel

8.4. wood

8.5. Reinforced and prestressed concrete

8.6. Cement

9. (Jeff/Bridge Selected: 七賢橋) Why would we need to build a bridge on the Love River?

9.1. The bridge finished its construction in November, 1977, and is already in need of repair.

9.2. It is one of the huge bridges across Love River, that had a lot of traffic.

9.3. Because it is a beam bridge with little to no design elements, and it is not aesthetically pleasing. It does not fit in to the artistic philosophy what Kaohsiung wants to represent now.

9.3.1. As what represents in the Art Museum of Gu- Shang District.

9.4. Bridges have been known to be a piece of art, and I believe building a much sophisticated bridge on Chunghwa 2nd Road, will make the surroundings look better.
