1. Discipled
1.1. Frank shows disipline through his hunting.
1.1.1. When Franklin hunts he is taught that the hunt is a process. He never rushes it to get a possible shot. He always waits for the perfect shot, that shot that will drop it.
1.2. Franklin also proves at a very young age that he can do any job.
1.2.1. In the book it shows that he herds kattle, hunts, takes care of the horses, and fixes fences.
1.3. Franklin is able to survive in the wild on his own, he taught himself what the old man didn't teach him.
2. Mature
2.1. Maturity by franklin is shown in many different parts of the story. He displays physical, mental, and emotional maturity at a very young age.
2.1.1. Franklin's physical fitness at a young age is shown through his immense amount of hunting and gun shooting with Bunky. He describes hunting with the old man on page 33 as "playing pure hell on the top of his thighs". The guns he was also shooting were outrageously powerful. As described in the story he was able to shoot a deer with a rifle. An average rifle releases about 1356 joules of energy which can roughly move 100kg, Franklin can withstand this power as a 9 year old.
2.1.2. Mental maturity is also shown when Franklin, who was enraged that his father drank alcohol on his birthday after promising not to, and the old man are talking at the end of chapter 14. "Can't hold it against yourself for being a kid." says the old man. "I friggin' know better and i ain't a kid." replies Franklin.
2.1.3. Franklin stayed calm in most situations when he was told about his mother or when he was told about something his father did in the past that affected him. Most times he did not yell, scream and shout. Sometimes he would get up and walk away to cool off. Like when he was told the story about his mother dying at his birth, Franklin stayed calm and went to the woods near by so he could calm down.
3. Honest
3.1. Franklin and Eldon are having a conversation and Franklin isn't afraid to speak his mind. This is shown through this exchange.
3.1.1. Franklin asks, "How come they call you twinkles?" "It's stupid," replies eldon, "Starlight. Twinkle, twinkle. You get it." And Franklin replies with, "yeah, but you ain't exactly the twinly sort." "What am I then?" asks Eldon "Cloudy, I guess. I don't know" says Franklin. His father shook his head and took another drink, smaller, more deliberate. "How I feel, I suppose." "You fixin' to die?" "Jesus. How'd you get so hard-assed?" "Just asking a question," answers Franklin.
3.2. When Eldon asks franklin to help him walk to the back country and franklin is being almost rude to his father. When his father says he can ride on his horse franklin says it's his walk then.
3.3. When his father says he wants to have a warrior's burial. and franklin replies, "You aint no warrior."
4. Strong Moral Principles
4.1. Franklin never killed anything for no reason. even when he did kill something he always respected it and knew it was to survive not for any other reason.
4.1.1. When he killed his first deer he felt really sad. the old man let him say what he wanted to the deer, telling him to "speak out of that (the sadness)". He left franklin on his own and he started to cry, apologizing to the deer and promising that,"whenever he comes here he'll think of you (the deer)."
4.2. When his dad passes away he gives him the warriors burial, making sure his father is resting peace fully.
5. Respectful
5.1. The old man says, “Me, I wouldn’t go. I’d stick with what I got …” “What I got ain’t no hell,” Franklin responds with. The old man looked around at the fusty barn and pursed his lips and squinted. “She’s ripe, she’s ramshackle, but she’s ours. She’s yours when I’m done. That’s more’n he ever give” “He’s my father.” - Pg.3
5.1.1. This quote shows how Franklin is respectful to his father. Even though he's never given anything to Frank, he still respects him.
5.2. At the beginning of Chapter 3, Franklin is offered a drink by a guy. He turns down his offer politely. Franklin shows respect to this random person that is, arguably, disrespecting his father.
5.3. Listens to the old man quietly whenever he talks.
5.3.1. This is shown when the old man asks the kid questions about his guns and the kid responds immediately, proving he's been listening carefully.
6. Caring
6.1. Cares for his father in his final days. Making him comfortable and making sure he isn't in pain giving him the booze medicine.
6.1.1. Even after Eldon told frank the story of how his mother died, frank still cared for his father giving eldon the bottle of medicine to not let eldon suffer. Most people wouldn't be able to do this after being told a story of how there own father betrayed them.
6.1.2. When his father wanted to sit up franklin helped him sit up so he can be a bit more relaxed.
