1. 1970- NREMT Began

1.1. 1971-AAOS( American Academy Orthopedic Surgeons) published first EMT textbook

1.1.1. 1979- Emergency Medicine became a specialty

1.2. 1973-1974- The EMS system act and guidelines for EMS systems created

1.2.1. 1977-The First National standard curriculum for paramedics was developed by the US DOT

2. 1980's-1990's-The NHTSA attempts to sustain EMS systems

3. 1800's Napoleon designated a vehicle with an attendant to care for battlefield injuries. 1st account of ambulance type vehicle

3.1. 1800- Baron Dominque, Chief physican in Napoleons army, establishes the first prehospital system of triaging and transporting patients.

3.2. 1800- Baron Dominque staffed his flying ambulances(ambulance volantes) with a Dr, a Porter Master, Drummer Boy, Non-commisioned officer and 24 infantry men

4. 1860- First recorded Medic/ambulance use in the U.S

4.1. 1865- The first civilian ambulance came out of the Commercial Hospital in Cinncinatti

4.2. 1869-Belluve Hospital started the first ambulance service in New York

5. 1899-The first vehicle type ambulances were used in Chicago by the Michael Reese Hospital

5.1. 1926-Phoneix FD adds service similar to modern-day EMS

5.2. 1928-Julian Stanley started the Roanoke Life saving crew in VA

6. 1940's- Due to the shortage of medical personell, EMS was left to Fire and police

6.1. 1951-During the Korean War , helicopters brought patients to MASH units ( Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals)

6.2. 1950's-1960's- European Countries started using MICU's which utilized specialty trained physicians

7. 1965-The National Academy of Science and the the National Research Council released the "White Paper"

7.1. 1966-The National Highway Safety Act was instituted, giving the DOT the authority to oversee EMS and 9-1-1

7.2. 1969-Dr. Eugene Nagel, "The Father of Paramedicine" started training ALS skills to the Miami FD, thus creating the first paramedic program

7.2.1. Dr. Nagel developed a telementry system that enabled firefighters to transmit a patients ECG to physcians at Jackson Memorial hospital.
