The Truman Show by Mind Map: The Truman Show

1. When Truman wants to leave and on one of the channels it was discussing how staying home is the best thing. They try to perused him to not leave, so he doesn't figure out what his life is really like

2. The radio breaks and the voices from the control room come through

3. When Truman starts to discover that things revolve around him

3.1. The characters are always creating commercials by promoting brands

3.2. At the power station, and someone approaches Truman and says, "sure Truman"

3.3. When Truman and Meryl are leaving to go to Atlantic City, and all the cars enter the street at the same time

3.4. When Truman runs into the middle of the main street and he controls the traffic

3.5. The radio talks about him and starts saying what he is doing

4. Key events/ moments that develop the narrative

4.1. Creating Obstacles

4.1.1. The traffic, when he wants to drive away

4.1.1.1. the camera quickly goes from the road to Truman and then back to the road to show how quickly the traffic came

4.1.2. Stopping Truman from going to Fiji

4.1.3. When Truman thinks he sees his dad as a homeless man and the characters have to drag him away and shove him on a bus

4.1.3.1. this scene all happens really quickly and the camera skips through the scene in a fast motion to show how quickly they wanted to get Truman's dad away from Truman

4.1.4. The producers of the truman show decide to fake that his "dad" drowns, so then he would have a phobia of water. Thus making him not want to travel anywhere.

4.1.5. When he goes to see his wife in hospital ~ his wife isn't really a surgeon he has to be stopped

4.1.5.1. Most of this scene's camera angle is of the perspective of Truman to emphasis what he can see

4.1.6. The strong winds and massive waves to stop Truman from hitting the edge of the dome.

4.2. Flashbacks and Photos

4.2.1. It shows normal scenes and Truman's discoveries: eg. Cardigan, magazine cut outs of Sylvia. And then it flashes back to how he discovered those items, people understand how Sailing with his dad, they make him believe that it was his fault. The producers of the Truman show did this to prevent Truman from ever leaving, being of afraid water would stop him.

4.2.2.1. Camera angle - they show a close up of the wedding photo to clearly show the emphasis and meaning on the crossing of the fingers.

4.2.3. Standing in front of statue in photo : "that’s really small"

5. Relationships that develop between characters

5.1. Fake Relationships

5.1.1. Relationship between Truman and Marlon

5.1.1.1. Truman goes to Marlon when he becomes suspicious - this shows that Truman trusts Marlon the most and he is the one he goes to when he needs help

5.1.1.2. - Hideout place on the pier, a place where they often go to be alone and talk, this shows that having known each other for years and years they have grown a strong relationship, for Truman this is real, but is just a character, and a role in Marlon’s eyes

5.1.1.3. When Marlon is talking to Truman, you see him being spoken to by one of the producers of the show, telling him exactly what to say and how to say it. Marlon: [Emotional almost to the point of tears] The point is, I would gladly step in front of traffic for you Truman. And the last thing I would ever do to you... Christof: [Feeding Marlon his lines] ... is lie to you. Marlon: ...is lie to you.

5.1.1.4. - For Truman, going to his best friend, Marlon for advice was the best thing to do. Most of the time a true friend would speak from the heart, and for Truman this is what it seemed like. But again, for Marlon, it was only a character, a scripted line, an acted out scene. Marlon was repeating what Christof was saying, therefor making it fake.

5.1.2. Relationship between Truman and Meryl

5.1.2.1. This relationship is the most manufactured one. Meryl has no feelings for Truman and Truman was almost forced into the marriage, and doesnt have "true" feelings for her.

5.1.2.2. Later on the marriage becomes very tense as Truman begins questioning the authenticity of Meryl.

5.1.2.3. Meryl quits the show after the pressure becomes too much for her!

5.2. Real Relationships

5.2.1. Relationship between Truman and his father

5.2.2. Relationship between Truman and viewers of the show

5.2.2.1. One way relationship from the viewers to Truman as they know who he is, but he doesn't know they exist

5.2.3. Relationship between Truman and Silvia

5.2.3.1. At the beginning there is a flashback to when Truman firsts meets Silvia. Even though Silvia is acting, her and Truman have a real connection which Silvia worries will effect the television show.

5.2.3.2. Their relationship was real but they were never were allowed to

5.3. Insignificant Relationships

5.3.1. Him and the magazine stand owner

5.3.1.1. This relationship was very simple and friendly - portrays the perfect relationship in a perfect town

5.3.2. Neighbours

5.3.2.1. Truman's relationship with his neighbors is rather bland as he speaks to them at the exact time every day and they always have the same conversation

6. How characters develop and change; their decisions, what influences them and motivations

6.1. Truman

6.1.1. Strives to find out the truth about his life after he begins to recognize strange occurrences.

6.1.2. determined to find out the true reason for the strange occurrences and to find his long lost love

6.2. Meryl

6.2.1. After a while begins to develop hatred of Truman. begins to become scared of him

6.2.2. The actors are motivated by money and fame.

6.2.3. Often acts over the top, acts fake and pretends she is loving life with Truman

6.3. Christof

6.3.1. Christof is motivated to look after truman and to making his life perfect.

6.3.2. truman has almost become a son figure to him therefore as the story and TV show progresses he makes critical decisions to make sure truman stays in his 'perfect' world so he can continue to father truman

6.3.3. Christof is in a way a "God" to Truman

6.4. Marlon

6.4.1. The actors are motivated by money and fame.

6.4.2. Truman's best friend from childhood, he is motivated by his caring for Truman.

6.5. Sylvia

6.5.1. Sylvia is motivated by her love of Truman and fighting for his rights.

6.5.2. changes her view on the show after she is taken away from truman (believes Truman is being unfairly treated by the network

6.5.3. sylvia is influenced by her love for truman and the truman show and makes it her dream to protest and save him and give him a proper life

6.6. Extras

6.6.1. Are obstacles to stop truman from realizing what is actually going on in his life

6.6.1.1. The costumes are very fake, the characters wear clothes that would have been worn in the 50s. The clothing inside the dome is very different to what is being worn on the outside.
