Reported Speech

1) Use

We use Reported Speech(RS) to report what someone has said in a previous moment.

Direct Speech(DS): He said," I wrote Jean a letter."

RS: He said he had written Jean a letter.

2) Tense Changes

When we report a speech we must change the tense of the original sentence.

*In some cases the tense does not change.

Present simple in the DS: She said, "It's cold." = Past simple in the RS: She said it was cold.

Present continuous in the DS: She said, "I'm teaching English online." = Past continuous in the RS: She said she was teaching English online.

Present perfect simple in the DS: She said, "I've been on the web since 1999." = Past perfect simple in the RS: She said she had been on the web since 1999.

Present perfect continuous in the DS: She said, "I've been teaching English for seven years." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she had been teaching English for seven years.

Past simple in the DS: She said, "I taught online yesterday." = Past perfect in the RS: She said she had taught online yesterday.

Past continuous in the DS: She said, "I was teaching earlier." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she had been teaching earlier.

*Past perfect in the DS: She said, "The lesson had already started when he arrived." = Past perfect in the RS: She said the lesson had already started when he arrived.(no change)

*Past perfect continuous in the DS: She said, "I'd already been teaching for five minutes." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she'd already been teaching for five minutes.(no change)

Modal verbs forms, Will in the DS: She said, "I'll teach English online tomorrow." = Would in the RS: She said she would teach English online tomorrow., Can in the DS: She said, "I can teach English online." = Could in the RS: She said she could teach English online., Must in the DS: She said, "I must have a computer to teach English online." = Had to in the RS: She said she had to have a computer to teach English online., Shall in the DS: She said, "What shall we learn today?" = Should in the RS: She asked what we should learn today., May in the DS: She said, "May I open a new browser?" = Might in the RS: She asked if she might open a new browser.

*Could, Would, Should, Might and Ought to, It does not change: DS: "I might go to the cinema", he said. = RS: He said he might go to the cinema.
