4. 1) Use
4.1. We use Reported Speech(RS) to report what someone has said in a previous moment.
4.1.1. Direct Speech(DS): He said," I wrote Jean a letter."
4.1.2. RS: He said he had written Jean a letter.
5. 2) Tense Changes
5.1. When we report a speech we must change the tense of the original sentence.
5.1.1. Present simple in the DS: She said, "It's cold." = Past simple in the RS: She said it was cold.
5.1.2. Present continuous in the DS: She said, "I'm teaching English online." = Past continuous in the RS: She said she was teaching English online.
5.1.3. Present perfect simple in the DS: She said, "I've been on the web since 1999." = Past perfect simple in the RS: She said she had been on the web since 1999.
5.1.4. Present perfect continuous in the DS: She said, "I've been teaching English for seven years." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she had been teaching English for seven years.
5.1.5. Past simple in the DS: She said, "I taught online yesterday." = Past perfect in the RS: She said she had taught online yesterday.
5.1.6. Past continuous in the DS: She said, "I was teaching earlier." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she had been teaching earlier.
5.1.7. *Past perfect in the DS: She said, "The lesson had already started when he arrived." = Past perfect in the RS: She said the lesson had already started when he arrived.(no change)
5.1.8. *Past perfect continuous in the DS: She said, "I'd already been teaching for five minutes." = Past perfect continuous in the RS: She said she'd already been teaching for five minutes.(no change)
5.1.9. Modal verbs forms
5.1.9.1. Will in the DS: She said, "I'll teach English online tomorrow." = Would in the RS: She said she would teach English online tomorrow.
5.1.9.2. Can in the DS: She said, "I can teach English online." = Could in the RS: She said she could teach English online.
5.1.9.3. Must in the DS: She said, "I must have a computer to teach English online." = Had to in the RS: She said she had to have a computer to teach English online.
5.1.9.4. Shall in the DS: She said, "What shall we learn today?" = Should in the RS: She asked what we should learn today.
5.1.9.5. May in the DS: She said, "May I open a new browser?" = Might in the RS: She asked if she might open a new browser.
5.1.10. *Could, Would, Should, Might and Ought to
5.1.10.1. It does not change: DS: "I might go to the cinema", he said. = RS: He said he might go to the cinema.
