Standards and Objectives of ELL Programs in Arizona and California

1. Structured English Immersion Program in Arizona
1.1. SUMMARY OF SEI: Structured English Immersion program or SEI is Arizona's number one ELL program. After taking the AZELLA students will be placed in a classroom based on English proficiency. Students are in English class for 4 hours a day learning how to read, write, and speak English. They are tested again towards the end of the school year to see if they will move up in ELL levels. Teachers are required to have not only a teaching certificate, but also a special endorsement of either second language learning or bilingual learning.
2. English Language Mainstream Classrooms in California
2.1. SUMMARY OF ELM: English Language Mainstream classrooms or (ELM) is for California students that are reaching fluency in English. After taking the CELDT students are placed in a classroom where they are immersed in the English language. Students learn subjects such as math, language arts, and science all in English.
