You borrow someone’s device (Smart Phone, Laptop etc) from a friend and accidentally break it.

1. Define the Problem | If I tell my friend they will get mad at me. If I don't tell them I might get away with it, but if they find out I did it they will be even more mad.
2. Explore Alternatives | 1. I could buy them a new device and give the new one to them, 2. I could offer money to pay for the device to be fixed, 3. I could offer to pay for a new device, 4. I could blame it on someone else so that they wouldn't be mad at me.
3. Consider the consequences | For all of these except for the last one one of my answers will be they get mad at me for breaking the device. 1. They get are angry because I didn't tell them before I bought the new one. Maybe they were about to get a new device anyway? They would probably be happy to have a new device instead of not having one at all, but it doesn't have the photos and everything from the last one. 2. They would appreciate me for being honest and for offering to fix it, but they would still be mad that I had broke it in the first place. 3. the same rules apply to 3 as they do to 2 except instead of fixing the device I offer to buy a new one. 4. There is a small chance they might not find out I did it but they probably will. When they find out I broke it and I lied about it they will be very, very mad. It could possibly ruin a relationship.
4. Identify Your Values | This is one of my best friends so I want to make the decision that would make them the least mad. If they got to mad they might not want to be friends with me and that is not what I want.
5. Decide and Act | Because I want my friend to know that I am very sorry for what I did I will offer to pay for the device to be fixed or to buy a new one for them. I will ask them which one they would rather have me do and tell them I'm very sorry and that it was an accident.
6. Evaluate Your Results | My friend was mad at me, but because I was honest for telling them and kind for offering to fix/buy the device they forgave me. We are still best friends and now we just laugh about when I broke their device.
