1. Teachers of EL’s students need to have in mind the following
1.1. Studen interest area
1.2. The culture background
2. English as a linguistic symbol
2.1. Deep orthography
2.1.1. The symbols (letters) do not regularly correspond to the same sound (phonemes).
3. The National reading panel outlined five components of reading.
3.1. 1. Phonemic awareness
3.1.1. The ability to hear and manipulate different sounds in language.
3.2. 2. Phonics
3.2.1. Is the relationship between a sound and its written letter (in English).
3.2.1.1. Not all languages are alphabetic and use letters. Instead Chinese use characters that roughly correspond to a syllable.
3.3. 3. Vocabulary
3.3.1. Is a cornerstone to language development because vocabulary is an area of language that supports listening, reading, speaking and writing.
3.4. 4. Fluency
3.4.1. The ability to read a text quickly and with accuracy.
3.5. 5. Comprehension
3.5.1. The ability for students to understand and interpret texts. For ELs it take many years to gain the skills.
