1. the gentleman with four other men then formed the International Commitee of the Red Cross, the ICRC.
1.1. Iin 1864,an international diplomatic conference in Geneva was called-the result was the adoption of the first Geneva convention for neutral humanitarian aid and protection for wounded soldiers
2. many years later, following the First and Second World Wars, other visionaries add more geneva conventions
2.1. help to protect wounded sick or shipwrecked sailors, prisoners of war and civilians affected by war
3. Now there were nearly 200 states signatory to the Geneva Conventions
3.1. the ICRC guard the conventions, gains backing for IHL and strives to protect the lives and dignity of victims
4. Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies active in disaster response, disaster preparedness, health care and first aid
4.1. also has a mandate to strengthen national societies in order to help people in need
5. JUNE 1859(in northern italy)-the gentleman inside the Geneva was on important business.
5.1. was determined to be given an audience by Napoleon, the powerful emperor of France.
5.1.1. He know that Napoleon was now somewhere nearby with the troops.
5.1.2. he found himself in the midst of a battlefield
6. outside the normally quiet village of Solferino-the French and Austrian armies were fighting.
6.1. thousand laid deads, dying and wounded
6.2. the medical troops simply could not cope
6.3. the weary and blooded soldiers on both sides had enough to save themselves and finding their way back to the lines
6.3.1. help was crucially needed
6.3.1.1. the gentleman set up a makeshift Hospital in a church in the village
6.3.1.1.1. the dying and wounded could receive attention and care in peace and quiet
6.3.1.1.2. he was joined by the villages, the women, the elderly-treat the French and Auatrians alike
