1. Hyperbole
1.1. Exaggerating for emphasis, usually for the sake of humor
1.1.1. The wind is so strong, if you step outside, you'll blow away
2. Idiom
2.1. A phrase that has a different meaning than in normal context
2.1.1. She was so nervous that she had butterflies in her stomach.
3. Metaphor
3.1. Comparison of two things, which are typically not alike at all.
3.1.1. The snow is a blanket upon the ground.
4. Personification
4.1. Referring to something as if it was human.
4.1.1. The sun smiled down on us.
5. Understatement
5.1. Implying more than is said. The opposite of hyperbole.
5.1.1. Needless to say, he was in a good mood after winning the lottery.
6. Alliteration
6.1. Repetition of a single letter or group of letters.
6.1.1. She sells seashells by the seashore.
7. Apostrophe
7.1. Addressing someone or something that is not literally listening.
7.1.1. Rain, rain, go away; come again another day.
8. Onomatopoeia
8.1. Using a word that sounds like what it is referring to.
8.1.1. The bees buzzed while the burgers sizzled on the grill.
9. Simile
9.1. Comparing two unlike items while using "like," "as," or "resembles."
9.1.1. He is as tough as nails.
