4.1. **Are you Lucky?** When I read this as the title of the first class the first thing I thought of was this article from Neil Roseman, a former VP for Amazon and Zynga on Hiring. I had just joined Uber and was starting to hire people into our small team in the Philippines, and was furiously googling, “best interview questions.” One caught my eye, “Do you consider yourself lucky?” Roseman says, *“If you look at what you’ve done, would you put yourself in the camp of people who say they’ve been lucky in their career?” Roseman explains. “I find a lot of people who will say I would have gotten that promotion but my manager canceled my product, or they find other reasons for failure. Those are the ones who say they don’t think of themselves as lucky. I’m looking for the people who embody the phrase ‘fortune favors the prepared.’ It’s the willingness to be ready and take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. At a startup, this is particularly valuable.” * I adopted the question into my interview questions, but for slightly different reasons, I want to find people who always think there’s a way out, a third option, and can recognize that it isn’t competence alone that’ll get them the opportunities they want – it’s something else.
