1. Mientras estaba haciendo funcionar la máquina, uno de sus colaboradores tocó, por casualidad, con un bisturí los nervios cruciales internos de la rana y todos los músculos de las patas se contrayeron como por una especie de calambre. Este hecho llama la atención de todos, y uno de los presentes sugirió que la acción se producía sólo en el momento en que se desprendía una chispa de la máquina. Sólo con una varilla de hierro, bisturí u otro objeto semejante se lograba esto, y no con una varilla de vidrio (sin humedad y sin polvo), aunque se frotaran con ella los nervios al hacer la chispa. Este experimento demuestra que la electricidad es capaz de provocar en el cuerpo humano parecido efecto al de esos misteriosos «espíritus animales» (o como también llamaron sucus nerveus, vis nervosa, vis viva...), de lo que fácilmente podía deducirse que el impulso nervioso era de naturaleza bioeléctrica y no algo espiritual o incluso algo puramente mecánico, como había dicho Descartes.

Decía que los alimentos, se digerían por el aparato digestivo, pasaban al hígado, en el que se producían los "espíritus naturales"; de ahí, estos van al corazón, que los convierte en "espíritus vitales"., y por la sangre llegan a los ventrículos del cerebro, donde se transforman en «espíritus animales», que discurren por los nervios y al llegar a los músculos son los que provocan la actividad orgánica.
