4. Henry Hudson

4.1. 1565-1611

4.2. English explorer and navigator

4.3. 1607-1608 made 2 attempts to find Northeast Passage to Cathay by a route above the Arctic Circle.

4.4. 1609- landed in North America and explored metropolitan area

4.5. Discovered the Hudson Strait and Hudson Bay on final expedition.

4.6. On final voyage Hudson was cast off from his ship in a small lifeboat.

5. Jacques Cartier

5.1. 1491-1557

5.2. French Explorer

5.3. April 20, 1534 - Explored the west coast of Newfoundland, discovered Prince Edward Island, & sailed through the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

5.4. Career ended after disobeying colonists and possessed worthless stones thought to be gold and diamond.

5.5. Claimed present day Canada for France.
