Songdo - A Sustainable City

1. Household's wastes are collected through a pneumatic pipes system that travel to a central sorting facility.

2. The waste will either be recycled or turned into energy

3. With the convenience of underground pipe lines, this eliminates the need for diesel trucks on the streets. As a result, Songdo has a much lower carbon footprint rate.

4. There are public transport stops every 12 minutes of every apartment building or business to encourage citizens to walk instead of driving. This as a result produce less air pollution and reduce carbon footprint.

5. Songdo encourage people to walk or bike more by building 40% of the city is area of green space. There are bike racks on eery block for bikers.

6. For citizens that drive will have the option to share car and give priority to parking electric cars.

7. Parking mostly take place underground to limit effect of urban heat island in the summer. There is more space for pedestrians at street level.

8. Songdo uses 118 LEED-certified buildings. This means that the district is design to use 40% less energy compare to neighboring cities.

9. Residents can keep tracks of their electricity usage compares to the average for their neighbors.

10. Recycle water by using effluent from buildings to flush toilets and street cleaning. Stormwater is captured on green roofs and also used to irrigate parks. Songdo plans that by 2020 the city would recycle 40% of the water used.

11. Water-cooled air conditioning system, and solar energy reduces energy consumption in each building by 30%.

12. Charging stations are available throughout the city to charge electric vehicles.
