My Current Event: Studies are Showing the Corona Virus may Change College Forever

1. Main Idea: Clubs and other extracurricular activities may not be brought back. COVID-19 put and end to many colleges' clubs. Now, colleges are starting to view these clubs as "overkill" in the sense that “It’s going to be difficult for students to fill in 10 spaces for extracurricular activities, flag down teachers for recommendations or take six A.P. courses and exams, admissions officers are going to have to focus on what matters.
2. Main Idea: Students’ thinking about colleges will become less emotional and more practical. Before, students were partially choosing a college based on how nice its dorms were, or how big of a party school it was. Now that students aren't living in the dorms, and not going to parties, they will be choosing schools based on how good its academics/professors are.
3. Vocab Word 1: Perspective People's perspective on college is going to be changed because of the Corona Virus
4. Vocab Word 3: Rationalization Colleges now have to make more rational decisions in order to keep their students safe. Examples of these decisions are doing online classes, and limiting the amount of people on campus.
5. Main Idea: The number of students that apply for early decision will grow tremendously, and they will have a much greater chance of being accepted. This is due to the fact that colleges want people "locked in" to their university, so they do not have to go through any more economic anxiety than they have to.
6. Main Idea: SAT & ACT scores may never be required again. After the COVID-19 outbreak, many colleges did not require students to submit these test scores. More and more colleges are starting to realize that they are not necessary in the application process.
7. Vocab Word 2: Social Structure The social structure of college has changed tremendously in response to this pandemic. Social interaction as well as simply hanging out in big groups is now extremely limited.
8. My Overall Thoughts: I think the Corona Virus has both negatively and positively affected college. It has negatively affected it because there is almost no more in-person learning going on, and the overall college atmosphere is no longer special. But, I also believe the corona virus had some positive affects on college. I think it served as a wake up call to let people know that standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT are not as important as they were thought to be. Test scores do not define a student's academic worth, and them being taken away will result in more successful in college applications for some students.
