1. Conservation
1.1. Problem- Loss of Natural Resources(Americans resources were being depleted and that was not good).
1.2. Reformer- Theodore Roosevelt(the president that made national parks). John Muir(a guy that camped with Roosevelt and helped him with national parks).
1.3. Solution- National Parks and Wildlife Refuge(This made it so Americans couldn't use all the resources we had).
2. Racism
2.1. Problem- Jim Crow Laws(laws that would restrict what African Americans can do in America). Segregation(seperated white and blacks in schools, public, and basically anywhere in the south).
2.2. Reformer- W.E.B Dubois(created a association that improved African American's rights). N.A.A.C.P( The association creating by W.E.B). Booker T Washington(founded a school to give African Americans education
2.3. Solution- Tuskegee School(a school that would help African Americans learn trades and economic strengths).
3. Health and Safety
3.1. Problem- Lack of Healthcare(workers didn't have anyone watch over them and make sure they were doing okay). Contaminated Food(not healthy food that would make the workers sick).
3.2. Reformer- Upton Sinclair(made a novel exposing that lack of sanitation and safety for workers and a meat packing plant). Alice Hamilton(a doctor who helped factory workers). Lilliand Wald(a nurse who came up with the idea of sending a nurse to a person that was to sick or poor to see a doctor).
3.3. Solution- Pure Food and Drug Act(this banned the sale of impure food and medicines). Visiting Nurse Program(Where nurses would visit people at their homes for checkups).
4. Suffrace
4.1. Problem- Women's Right to Vote(they had to fight to get voting rights because they thought it was not fair)
4.2. Reformer- NAWSA(an association that fought for womens rights). Elizabeth Cady Stanton(was NAWSA's first president). Susan B. Anthony(another NAWSA president that fought for every state to give women voting rights).
4.3. Solution- 19th Amendment(gave women the right to vote).
5. Prohibition
5.1. Problem- Alcoholism(people believed it lead to insanity and poverty). Immortality(gambling and the destruction of families).
5.2. Reformer- Temperance Movement(a movement that lead to the ban of alcohol). Mary Hunt(spread the word that the ban of alcohol would lead to mortality and greater health). Carrie Nation(brought a hatchet to Saloons and showed the evil of alcohol).
5.3. Solution- 18th Amendment(banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol).
5.4. Unintended Consequences- Speakeasies(nightclubs that sold alcohol illegally). Bootleggers(People that would sell and transport alcohol illegally). Organized Crime(gangs would battle over bootleggers).
5.5. Solution #2- 21st Amendment(repealed prohibition but didn't end the gang crimes)
6. Poverty
6.1. Problem- Crowded Tenements (poor design, rundown, unsafe). Urban Slums(Lacked water, electricity, sanitation)
6.2. Reformer- Jacob A Riis(Exposed conditions of tenements and slums, Jane Adams(Bought a house and turned it into a settlement home
6.3. Solution- Reform laws to improve conditions of the slums. Settlement Houses
7. Corruption
7.1. Problem- Political Machines-Would bribe and rig elections(Tammany Hall,Ex)
7.2. Reformer- Robert M. La Follette(Was a governer that expanded rights for citizens in the business world
7.3. Solution- Direct Primary(Where voters choose candidates for parties to run in elections)
8. Child Labor
8.1. Problem- The children could not get education and had poor work that was dangerous
8.2. Reformer- Lewis Hine(photographed work conditions for children in factories
8.3. Solution- National Child Labor Committee(Was dedicated to ending all child labor)
9. Workers Rights
9.1. Problem- Low Wages(paid very poor for the amount of work they did). Long Work Hours(little rest with difficult work that pays poor).
9.2. Reformer- Samuel Gompers(Worked as a factory worker then became the head of a labor union). AFL(created unions for workers to improve their conditions).
9.3. Solution- Labor Unions(this gave the workers a say and more impact on what their work was like). Strikes(where the workers don't work until their problem is fixed).
