Convergent Plate により Mind Map: Convergent Plate

1. In plate tectonics, a convergent boundary, also known as a destructive plate boundary, is an actively deforming region where two tectonic plates or fragments of lithosphere move toward one another and collide. As a result of pressure, friction, and plate material melting in the mantle, earthquakes and volcanoes are common near convergent boundaries. When two plates move towards one another, they form either a subduction zone or a continental collision. This depends on the nature of the plates involved. In a subduction zone, the subducting plate, which is normally a plate with oceanic crust, moves beneath the other plate, which can be made of either oceanic or continental crust. During collisions between two continental plates, large mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas are formed.

2. Plates move towards each other and become faulted, folded and sometimes subducted.

3. Oceanic-Oceanic

3.1. When two oceanic plates converge, the denser plate subducts under the other less dense plate.

3.2. It is call subduction

3.3. Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap between the plates as they move apart

4. Oceanic-Continental plate convergence

5. Step 1: When an oceanic plate converges with continental plate, the denser oceanic plate subducts beneath the less dense continental plate.
