Digital Technologies: Year 3 Algorithms and Coding LESSON 1 により Mind Map: Digital Technologies: Year 3 Algorithms and Coding LESSON 1

1. Materials

1.1. New topic words and definitions- laminated for word wall

1.2. Point A and B 4x4 grids for task 1 (1 per person)

1.3. 4x4 grids for task 2 (2 per person)

1.4. Technologies work book

1.5. iPads

2. TASK : Use visually represented sequenced steps (algorithms) (ACTDIP011)

2.1. Use grid paper to draw/colour two pathwaysl from POINT A to POINT B Say the steps out loud Write the steps in words first Then write the steps in Code

2.2. Problem 2

3. LINK TO NUMERACY: Create and interpret simple grid maps to show position and pathways (ACMMG065)

4. TASK 2: Define simple problems, and describe and follow a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve them (ACTDIP010)

4.1. Each student will be given a two 4x4 grids where they can draw a random pattern or picture by shading different squares:

4.2. Example of shaded pattern

4.3. Students then write the algorithm in coding (drawing arrows) The instructions start from the top left corner and must be any of the following: - Move One Square Right - Move One Square Left - Move One Square Up - Move One Square Down - Shade square Students swap algorithms (not images) with a partner and attempt to draw each other’s image by following the steps (like a programmer).

5. Focus Questions

5.1. What is an Algorithm?

5.2. What is Coding?

5.3. What is a Program

6. Vocabulary

6.1. Algorithms: a process or set of steps to be followed to perform a task, especially by a computer.

6.2. Coding: Transforming actions into a symbolic language

6.3. Programs: An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine (or in today’s lessons case, a person)
