Strategies used during the Civil War

1. Offensive- Defensive Plan

1.1. The North had to establish new fighting strategies, among them was the Offensive-Defensive Plan

1.2. The 'offensive' in the plan caused most of the casualties during the war.

1.3. Offensive- Go out and gain the advantage and the land

1.4. Defensive- Protect land and protect the area from attack

1.5. Jefferson Davis developed this plan- flawed, tried to address some of the issues shown in the Mexican war 1846-1848

2. Anaconda Plan

2.1. Blockade around the south to prevent trade, 'constrict' the south into submission

2.2. (Snake constricting and cutting off of the south's supply and communication)

2.3. Maj. Gen. Henry Wager Halleck, a Northern leader, decided to focus on Mississippi, as they could cut off communications between the two sides of the south

2.4. Significant to the entire Civil War
